Lakewood High School's Internet Agreement

New Rule from Pinellas County:

  1. You can only go to the Internet site that is specified by Mr. Thompson.
  2. A seating chart must be made (So that the user of a particular computer at a particular time, can be traced).
    • So do not switch seats or computers, instead:
    • Tell Mr. Thompson about any problems being experienced and let him fix it.

Math

Announcements:
  • Vocabulary test next Monday
  • If the front wheel of a bicycle has Radius = 13 inches find the following: 
    • If the wheel turns 100 times, how far has the cycle travelled?
    • If it covers this distance in 50 seconds, what is the speed of the cydle?  (Speed = Distance / Time)
    • How does the bike's speedometer work?
    • How many times does a bicycle's wheel turn in 1 mile?
Materials:
  • Bicycle, tape measure, masking tape.
Vocabulary:
  • Radius, Diameter, Circumference, Center, Pi, Geometry Compass, Area, Sector.

Method:
  • Use cycle's front wheel to show that cycle moves forward a distance of 1 Circumference for each turn of the wheel.
    • Discuss the solutions of the Cycle problems.
  • Classwork: Do the following problems:
    • Find the area of a cicle whose Radius is 20 cm.
    • Find the area of a circle whose diameter is 26 inches
    • A circular athletic track has a Radius of 50 meters.
      • If I run around it once, how far have I run?
      • How much turf would be required to cover the inside area of the track?
      • If I run straight across it through its center, how far would I run?

Evaluation:
  • Good classes.
  • Used my bicycle to show connection between Circumference and distance moved.  
  • Students copied my solution to the 3 problems.
  • Showed how a bicycle speedometer works to all but Period 7.
